Chinkin(gold inlay)is one of the representative Japanese traditional techniques as same as Maki-e.
In the art of Chinkin, the lacquered surface is carved with the special chisels first.
Then, the carved dots and lines are lacquered, and colored with precious gold foil and powder.
This art gives the fine and delicate finish combined with powerful, three-dimensional expressiveness.
The Chinkin technique involves engraving only, therefore, once the work begins, it cannot be corrected even if an error is made.
That is, no failure is allowed.
Each touch of the carving chisel requires excellent skill and concentration.
